Jen Shewring – Biography and Artist Statement

 
Jen was selected as the Feature Artist for Canterbury Art Exhibition in 2016 and also won a small works prize in a previous year. She creates vibrant on trend paintings producing bold statement pieces with the use of pattern and texture. For the past 18 years Jen has worked as a professional full time Melbourne artist concentrating predominantly on painting contemporary semi abstract art. 'My work is to make something with both emotion and beauty. I have an absolute obsession with paint, I focus on it's buttery texture and use rich colour and reflected light to engage the viewer. My artworks are spontaneous but intentional, starting each painting with uninhibited broad brushstrokes moving in towards the detail and adding splashes of contrasting colours to give my paintings that eye-catching sparkle'. Each work is a series of layers until the final image is built up to bring dimension to the surface along with imagery to narrate the viewer through the painting. Jen's work is fresh, alive and allows you to continually discover new aspects in each piece of art.
 
After completing an Honours Degree at Monash University in Melbourne, Jen spent time travelling Europe, Indonesia and Australia. She continues to study and paint alongside other well known local Artists and friends, always sharing stories, techniques and ideas. She predominantly paints using oils, acrylics and mixed media.

Jen has been continuously exhibiting as a professional Artist since 2002 and participates in a number of group exhibitions in Melbourne every year. Her artwork has been selected for many private and commercial collections around Australia and overseas including the Harmon Hotel Group. Over the years she has won various awards in her creative pursuits.
